Thank you all so much for making Redmatch 2 the #1 multiplayer game on itch.io!

Now here's a massive update! I'm releasing it on the browser version of the game first, and then uploading it for windows, mac, and linux as the day goes on.

Unfortunately, because this game is being hosted on itch.io, with the update all progress will be reset. IF YOU WANT TO SAVE PROGRESS, PLEASE USE THE DOWNLOAD VERSION. The web version is fragile, and any updates will wipe all progress (I am not in control of this, it's just how itch.io works).

GRAPHICS OVERHAUL

  • Switched the color space from gamma to linear. Basically, better looking colors.
  • Improved shadows
  • New realistic skybox
  • Baked global illumination + shadows for better performance
  • Use the Ultra setting for soft dynamic shadows. Requires a level restart if you are currently in a match.

GAME CHANGES

  • Removed barrels from the maps. You can still get barrels with barrelpocalypse.
  • Players will now have 2 seconds of spawn protection (disabled if they shoot).
  • Reduced the amount of speed/jump that upgrades give you by half.
  • You will now no longer lose upgrade points when you die. You will still lose one of your highest upgrades, but this should make it easier to save up over time if you're having trouble keeping upgrades.
  • There is now a 60 second AFK timer. You will be kicked if you are not active for more than 60 seconds. This is to prevent the number of players just leaving their tab open and taking up player slots on the servers.
  • Finally we have an actual OST! The new main menu music was composed by Helix.
  • Made a lot of tweaks to the design of multiple maps (Mainly Spleef, Siege, Arena, and Playground). I'm open to suggestions and changes to the maps in the future! You can join the discord server to talk to me about new feature ideas.
  • Redesigned the chat system. No more janky multiple-tab stuff. It should be a much nicer experience now.
  • Optimized netcode. Sending and recieving data should be a lot faster now! Hopefully this will reduce the amount of laggy players.

MINOR CHANGES

  • Spleef blocks will now respawn.
  • The game will now tell you the reason you are unable to connect (most common is full servers)
  • Removed the escape menu on the main screen, and moved the settings button to the main button list.
  • Added realtime shadows to flashlights.
  • Improved the font quality. No more weird boxes around text, and there are higher quality outlines.
  • Decreased the range of some of the modifiers, because some people were going a little crazy.
  • Maps no longer show their vote count if it is 0.
  • Implemented anti aliasing (on very high and ultra resolutions).
  • Removed the muzzle light flash for night (as cool as it was, it was blinding and was going to give someone a seizure).
  • Players, guns, and bullet effects now have shadows.
  • The color of the bullet impact debri is now the color of the object it hit.
  • There is no longer a cap on the amount of players in a room.
  • Moved the upgrade cabinets from spawn to the sites on Streets.
  • The web browser version of Redmatch 2 now uses WebGL 2.0. This means we can have improved graphics and (hopefully) better
  • framerates!
  • Added some slight variation to barrel explosion times. Should make the massive explosions more impressive when they aren't all going off at the exact same time.
  • Removed the hipfire only room setting as it was just confusing people.
  • Added a censorship filter (only for harsh swears and racial slurs, you can still use tamer swears, I don't care).
  • If you get a higher level due to a weird bug, but want to maintain your sense of progression and go back to a lower level, go to your account menu, hold down the E X and P keys, and enter the level you want. This is irreversible so do not do it unless you really want to go back to a lower level. You cannot set your level to a higher level than you currently are.
  • Added a Hide UI button, default is F2. You can also separately enable/disable your crosshair and hit indicator.
  • Removed rain
  • Added emotional support.
  • Added a new break room.
  • Added an artistic experience.

BUGFIXES

  • The chat system has been reworked and now properly works with timezones.
  • On Siege and Ruins you will no longer hear easter egg music when the game ends, and the UI will no longer bug out on any map when the game ends.
  • Opening chat will no longer remove your vote.
  • The alternate escape menu button will no longer open the escape menu while in chat.
  • You can no longer quit the game in WebGL (just close the tab).
  • The death camera will no longer go through walls.
  • You can no longer bind the escape menu to left mouse
  • Player outlines in the web version for team deathmatch have been removed (they were buggy and massive)
  • Added collisions to the top of roofs in Streets.
  • The scope is now the default sight for the sniper.
  • Default quality for desktop is now ultra.
  • Fixed the room list hiding all rooms when a new one is created (thanks SFDarkHZ!).
  • You can now actually click links in the browser version.
  • Barrels will no longer lag out players who join late.
  • Players who join late will no longer see destroyed objects.

Regarding stolen copies of the game:

Recently (as some of you may have seen on the main menu) websites have started stealing and reuploading Redmatch 2, taking away players from my website which makes it impossible to roll out new updates and make sure players are playing in a safe and ad-free environment.

You can help by making sure to always play the game or download it here, on itch.io. Playing on these illegal websites gives them incentive to keep stealing my game. Thank you to all of you who have alerted me to this issue. It means a lot to me.
